Specialist Insurance for Tools in Storage

Since 2011 we have been providing specialist storage insurance trusted by customers across the UK. Cover can start from just a single day or run for a full year, making it ideal for personal tools, DIY equipment, trade tools and business equipment stored in professional storage facilities. It can also cover tools stored alongside other contents in the same storage unit.

What Your Tools in Storage Are Covered For

Our tools in storage insurance provides protection against insured risks such as fire, smoke damage, theft following forcible and violent entry, storm, flood, escape of water, impact by insured external causes and malicious damage, subject to the policy wording, exclusions and conditions. Cover can be suitable for tools stored on their own or alongside other eligible contents within an accepted storage facility.

Suitable for Personal or Business Tools

Our policies are suitable for both personal tools and business tools stored in professional storage facilities. This includes DIY tools, power tools, hand tools, workshop equipment and general business equipment stored in self storage units. It can also be suitable for larger tools and machinery such as bench tools, pillar drills, lathes and similar workshop items where accepted within the storage unit.

Extra Benefits Included at No Extra Cost

Every policy includes £2 million public liability insurance as standard. Policies also include instant online documents, flexible cover from 1 day to 365 days, limited goods in transit cover while transporting qualifying home contents and personal effects directly to or from the storage facility, and pro-rata refunds where no claim has been made, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

How Much Does Our Self Storage Insurance Cost?

£10,000 of Cover from as Little as 25p a Day

Our self storage insurance is priced to stay competitive while remaining flexible. For example, insuring £10,000 worth of contents for a full 12 months costs just £90.54, which works out at around 25p per day for protection against the insured risks and included public liability cover.

Annual cover is available from just £18.23 per year, making it one of the most affordable ways to insure items kept in self storage when compared to standard home insurance extensions or storage facility policies.

With £2 million public liability included as standard, pro-rata refunds potentially available if you move out early and no claim has been made, subject to policy terms and conditions, and instant online quotes and documents, Quote Monkey offers excellent value self storage insurance trusted by customers across the UK since 2011.

What Affects the Price of Your Policy

Value of Goods Stored – Higher sums insured naturally increase the premium.
Storage Location – Some postcodes carry higher or lower risk for flood or theft.
Duration of Cover – Choose from 1 to 365 days; longer policies often work out cheaper per day.
Type of Goods – High-value items like jewellery, fine wine, or artworks may require tailored terms.

Ways to Keep Your Premium Low

Keep an accurate, up-to-date inventory of your stored items.
Choose a well-maintained storage facility with strong security measures.
Select the correct sum insured — enough to replace your items but not over-estimating their value.

Instant Quotes and Flexible Payments

Get a personalised quote in seconds with our easy online form. Cover can start the same day and is available from just one day up to a full year. If you remove your goods earlier than planned and no claim has been made, a pro-rata refund may be available, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

Storm Flooding: An insured storm or flood event allows water into the unit and damages stored hand tools and boxed equipment. Whether a claim is covered depends on the cause and the policy terms, limits and exclusions.
Break-in and Theft: Thieves gain access by qualifying forcible and violent means and steal insured power tools. The contents loss may be covered subject to the policy wording, security conditions, limits and insurer assessment; no cover for repairing the storage facility's door or lock is implied.
Vehicle Impact: A vehicle strikes the storage building and damages correctly declared tools inside. Any claim would be assessed against the relevant insured peril, policy conditions, limits and exclusions.

These scenarios are illustrative only. Actual cover and claim outcomes depend on the circumstances and the applicable policy wording, schedule, conditions, limits and exclusions.

Jewellery Theft: Thieves gain entry by qualifying forcible and violent means and steal correctly declared jewellery. Cover may apply subject to security requirements, policy limits, conditions, exclusions and insurer assessment.
Artwork or Antique Fire Damage: An insured fire damages correctly declared artwork or antiques. Any claim would be assessed under the applicable insured peril and policy terms.
Bicycle or E-Bike Theft: A bicycle is stolen following qualifying forcible and violent entry. Cover may apply subject to the policy conditions, accepted item details and the maximum payable amount of £1,000 for any one bicycle.
Business Stock Water Damage: Water enters a storage unit following an insured event and damages cartons of retail stock. Whether the loss is covered depends on the cause and whether it falls within an insured peril, subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.
Tools or Equipment Theft: Correctly declared power tools are stolen following qualifying forcible and violent entry. Any claim would be assessed against the policy wording, security requirements, limits, conditions and exclusions.

All example claims are subject to the insured items being correctly declared and accepted under the policy. High-value goods may require individual specification, additional security measures or underwriting approval. Any claim remains subject to the applicable policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits.

These examples are illustrative only and do not guarantee that a claim will be paid. Cover depends on the insured event, the circumstances and the applicable policy wording and schedule.

Public Liability Insurance – Included as Standard

Essential Protection Required by Many Storage Facilities

Many professional storage facilities require customers to carry public liability insurance as part of their terms and conditions. This cover can respond where you are legally liable for accidental injury to a third party or accidental damage to third-party property in connection with the insured storage risk, subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits. Unlike some providers that charge extra or treat this as an optional add-on, Quote Monkey includes £2 million public liability cover as standard with every storage insurance policy. Each storage provider sets its own requirements, so inclusion of this benefit does not guarantee acceptance or compliance at every facility.

What Public Liability Insurance Covers

Third-Party Injury – Cover may respond if you are legally liable for accidental injury to a visitor, staff member or contractor in connection with the insured storage risk.
Property Damage – Cover may respond if you are legally liable for accidental damage to another person’s property caused in connection with the insured storage risk.
Legal Defence Costs – Eligible defence costs may be covered where the policy responds, subject to its terms, conditions, exclusions and limits.

Typical Example Claims

Trip and Fall Incident: A friend helping you move items trips over a box left outside the unit and suffers an ankle injury. If you are found legally liable, the claim may be considered subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits.
Damage to Neighbouring Unit: A shelving unit inside your storage space collapses and damages goods stored in the unit next door. If you are legally liable, eligible third-party property damage may be considered under the policy.

More Example Claims

Water Damage Claim: A water leak from an item stored in your unit damages furniture in a neighbouring space. If you are legally liable and the policy responds, eligible third-party loss may be considered subject to the applicable terms and limits.
Accidental Vehicle Impact: While manoeuvring equipment, you accidentally damage another customer’s vehicle in the loading bay. Cover would depend on legal liability, the precise circumstances and whether the policy responds, subject to its terms, conditions, exclusions and limits.

With £2 million public liability insurance automatically included, qualifying claims may be covered where you are legally liable, subject to the policy terms, conditions, exclusions and applicable limits.

Limited Goods in Transit – What’s Included

Important: This Is Not Comprehensive Transit Insurance

Our storage policy includes a limited level of protection while your goods are being moved, but it is not designed to be full goods-in-transit insurance. Please read the scope, conditions and limits below and refer to your Schedule for exact terms.

Where and When Transit Cover Applies

Covered Property: Home contents and personal effects only.
Covered Period: During the Period of Insurance shown on your Schedule.
Covered Vehicles: While goods are within an enclosed car or commercial road vehicle.
Covered Journeys: Direct transit to the Self-Storage Location shown on your Schedule from any UK location; or direct transit from that Self-Storage Location to any location within the British Isles.

Fire

What is covered: Damage caused by fire affecting the transporting vehicle or the goods inside.

Example Claim: A sudden engine fire in the removal vehicle causes smoke and heat damage to insured clothing and personal belongings. Cover may apply subject to the transit section, policy limits, conditions and exclusions.

Road Traffic Accident

What is covered: Damage where the conveying enclosed car or commercial road vehicle is also damaged.

Example Claim 1: During direct transit to the insured storage facility, the enclosed removal vehicle is involved in a road traffic accident and is itself damaged. Some insured household contents inside the vehicle are also damaged. Cover may apply subject to the transit section, policy limits, conditions and exclusions.

Theft

What is covered: Theft where entry to or exit from the vehicle was effected by forcible and violent means.

Example Claim: During a qualifying direct journey to the insured storage facility, thieves force open the rear doors of an attended, enclosed removal van and steal boxes containing clothing and household belongings. Any claim would be assessed against the transit cover terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.

Key Exclusions and Limits

No cover if the conveying enclosed car or commercial road vehicle was unattended at the time of the loss.
Monetary Limit: We do not cover more than £10,000 or your sum insured, whichever is the less.
Scope Reminder: This is a limited benefit and does not replace a comprehensive goods-in-transit policy for removals or commercial haulage.

Making a Claim

Notify Us Immediately of any event which might give rise to a claim under this section.
Hold Liable Responsible Parties – any carrier, bailee or third party in line with their terms of trade.
Provide a Written Report of the event to us as soon as possible.
Notify the Police promptly of any vandalism, malicious acts, theft or attempted theft involving the insured property.

Cover always applies subject to the full policy wording and the limits and conditions set out on your quotation, Schedule and Policy Document. If you require broader protection for removals or commercial transport, please contact us to discuss a dedicated goods-in-transit policy.

Policy Ownership – What Name Should the Policy Be In and Why It Matters

Ensuring the policy is taken out in the correct legal name is essential. In the event of a claim, the insured name on your policy must match the legal owner of the goods to help ensure that any settlement can be paid without unnecessary delay. If you are unsure which name to use—especially for shared ownership, business-owned goods, or items held on behalf of another party—our team can guide you during the quotation process.

Policies can be issued in a wide range of names including individuals, joint names, families, partnerships, limited companies, charities, trusts, estates, management companies, residents’ associations, and in some cases pension or SIPP arrangements, depending on the ownership of the goods being insured.

You can also ask for interested parties to be noted on the policy where appropriate, such as another individual, a joint owner, a lender, a bank, a finance company, a storage provider, or another organisation with a financial interest in the insured property.

If you need an interested party to be shown, there is a box on the online application form where these details can be added. This helps make sure the policy reflects the ownership and financial interest arrangements correctly from the outset.

Yes, but only for qualifying home contents and personal effects. The policy includes limited goods in transit cover during qualifying direct journeys to or from the insured storage location, subject to the policy wording. Goods must be transported in an enclosed car or commercial road vehicle. Cover is restricted to specified insured events, including fire, qualifying road traffic accidents and theft involving forcible and violent entry or exit. The maximum payable is £10,000 or the sum insured, whichever is less. Unattended vehicles are excluded. Business tools, trade equipment and commercial stock are not automatically covered under this transit benefit.
Our documents are widely accepted by many major UK self-storage operators and other storage providers. However, each facility sets its own requirements, so it is sensible to check with your chosen site if you are unsure.
No. Many storage facilities allow customers to arrange their own insurance as long as suitable evidence of cover is provided and the policy meets the facility’s requirements.
Yes. As with all insurance policies, exclusions and conditions apply. These commonly include wear and tear, gradual deterioration, damp, mould, vermin, deliberate damage, and any loss not insured under the wording. You should always read your quotation, schedule and policy wording carefully so you understand the exact cover provided.
The premium depends on the sum insured, the storage location, the type of goods being stored and the length of cover required. We provide instant online quotations, and annual cover is available from £18.23 for some risks.

Cover may be available only where the storage location is accepted under the scheme and correctly declared. Not every container, room, unit or facility is automatically eligible, so the quotation and policy documents should be checked before cover is arranged.
If your goods are kept in more than one unit at the same accepted storage location, they can often be included under one policy. Goods stored at different addresses or different storage facilities require separate policies so that each location is correctly declared.
A full inventory is not normally required when taking out cover, but you must declare the total replacement value accurately. Items that require specification or referral should be listed correctly during the quote process. The maximum payable for any one bicycle is £1,000.
You should contact us if the replacement value of your goods increases so that the sum insured can be reviewed and, where necessary, amended. Underinsurance could affect a claim settlement.
No. Cover is arranged on a single upfront payment basis. However, you can choose a short policy period from one day upwards, or arrange annual cover where appropriate.
The limited goods in transit section may still apply where someone else is transporting the insured goods, but cover always depends on the exact circumstances and whether all transit conditions are met. Please refer to the wording for the full requirements.
No. Gradual deterioration, damp, mould, mildew, vermin and general wear and tear are not covered. Suitable packing, protection and a well-maintained storage environment are important.
