Why Choose Quote Monkey for Valuables In Self Storage Insurance?
How Our Specialist Storage Insurance Stands Out
Quote Monkey provides specialist valuables in self storage insurance for customers storing high-value items at professional storage facilities across the UK. Whether you are storing jewellery, watches, antiques, collectibles, artwork, precious items, family heirlooms or other valuable possessions, our flexible policy helps protect against theft, fire, flood, accidental damage and other common storage risks.
Although this page focuses on valuables in self storage, the same policy can also cover general household goods, furniture, boxes, business equipment, stock, tools and other non-valuable items stored in the same unit. This means you can insure all of your stored contents under one self storage insurance policy rather than arranging separate cover for different item types.
With flexible cover from 1 day to 365 days, instant online documents, £2 million public liability included as standard, and the ability to specify higher-value items during the quote process, our cover is designed for customers who need dependable insurance for valuables and contents in storage.
How Much Does Our Self Storage Insurance Cost?
£10,000 of Cover from as Little as 25p a Day
Our self storage insurance is priced to stay competitive while remaining flexible. For example, insuring £10,000 worth of contents for a full 12 months costs just £90.54, which works out at around 25p per day for comprehensive protection and included public liability cover.
Annual cover is available from just £18.23 per year, making it one of the most affordable ways to insure items kept in self storage when compared to standard home insurance extensions or storage facility policies.
With £2 million public liability included as standard, pro-rata refunds if you move out early, and instant online quotes and documents, Quote Monkey offers excellent value self storage insurance trusted by customers across the UK since 2011.

What Your Goods Are Covered For
Comprehensive Protection for Stored Contents
Our self storage insurance protects your belongings against many of the most common and costly risks faced by items in storage. Cover is in force whether your unit is occupied or unoccupied and applies to a wide range of personal and business contents.
Fire and Smoke Damage – Protection if a fire starts within the facility or in a neighbouring unit and damages your stored goods.
Theft or Attempted Theft – Covers loss of items stolen following forced entry or damage caused during a break-in.
Storm and Flood – Safeguards your belongings if severe weather leads to water damage or roof failure at the storage site.
Burst Pipes or Escape of Water – Pays for damage caused by leaks or sudden water discharge inside the unit.
Impact Damage – Covers losses if a vehicle, falling tree, or other object strikes the building or your stored items.
Vandalism or Malicious Damage – Provides compensation if your storage unit is intentionally damaged by a third party.
Limited Goods in Transit Cover – Includes a degree of protection while your items are being transported to or from the storage facility.
Typical Examples of Claims We Settle
Electrical Fire: A neighbouring unit suffers an electrical fault that starts a fire, causing smoke and heat damage to your furniture and household goods. Your policy pays for professional cleaning and replacement where necessary.
Storm Flooding: Heavy rain causes the storage yard drains to overflow, letting water into the unit and damaging cartons of documents and clothing. The cost of drying and replacing affected items is covered.
Break-in and Theft: Thieves force open the facility gate and damage the lock on your unit, stealing power tools and bicycles. The policy reimburses the loss and contributes to repair of the damaged door and lock.
Vehicle Impact: A delivery truck accidentally reverses into the side of the storage building, shifting shelving and damaging boxed stock inside. The insurance covers the resulting loss of goods.
This wide-ranging protection gives you confidence that, if the unexpected happens, you have the financial support to replace or repair your stored possessions quickly.

Types of Goods We Can Cover
Flexible Protection for Personal and Business Items
Whether you’re storing household contents, business stock, or specialist collections, our self storage insurance is designed to meet a wide range of needs. Cover applies whether you rent a professional self-storage unit, use a private storage room, or keep goods in a secure wooden crate or similar facility.
Household Contents – Furniture, furnishings, clothing, electrical appliances, books, and everyday possessions kept safe during a house move or long trip.
Business Property – Office furniture, archived documents, spare equipment, and retail stock that is stored but not used for trading inside the unit.
Valuables and Collectibles – Jewellery, gold, silver, coins, medals, stamps, fine wine, vintage watches, and other high-value personal collections (subject to underwriting approval and correct itemisation).
Art and Antiques – Paintings, sculptures, antiques, and bespoke artworks requiring specialist cover.
Bicycles and Sporting Equipment – Bicycles, electric bikes, sports gear, and leisure equipment kept securely between uses.
Tools and Equipment – Hand tools, power tools, and professional equipment for personal or business storage, provided the unit itself is not used as a workplace.
Typical Example Claims
Fine Wine Damage: A temperature-control fault in the storage unit spoils a collection of vintage wine. Your policy covers the cost of replacing the affected bottles.
Jewellery Theft: Despite the facility’s CCTV and alarms, thieves manage to force entry and steal a locked jewellery box containing gold and diamond pieces. The policy reimburses the insured value of the stolen items.
Artwork or Antique Impact Damage: During routine maintenance at the storage site, a heavy object accidentally falls onto a packed sculpture crate, cracking the piece. The cost of specialist restoration is covered.
Bicycle or E-Bike Theft: High-end road bikes and electric bikes are stolen after an attempted break-in on a quiet night. The policy pays for replacement at current market value.
Business Stock Water Damage: A minor leak in the roof drips onto cartons of retail stock, causing staining and loss of resale value. The insurance covers the replacement cost of the damaged goods.
Tools or Equipment Loss: A contractor’s securely packed power tools are stolen while in storage during an off-season period. The policy provides compensation to replace them quickly.
All example claims are subject to you accurately specifying and insuring these items when arranging your policy. Declaring high-value goods such as jewellery, art, fine wine, or specialist collections ensures they receive the correct level of cover and can be fully protected if the unexpected happens.
Whatever you need to store—whether everyday possessions or valuable investments—Quote Monkey can arrange tailored protection so your belongings are covered for unexpected risks while in storage.

Public Liability Insurance – Included as Standard
Essential Protection Required by Many Storage Facilities
Many professional storage facilities require customers to carry public liability insurance as part of their terms and conditions. This cover protects you if a third party is injured or their property is damaged in connection with your stored goods. Unlike some providers that charge extra or treat this as an optional add-on, Quote Monkey includes £2 million public liability cover as standard with every storage insurance policy. This ensures you remain fully compliant with most facility requirements without additional cost or administration.
What Public Liability Insurance Covers
Third-Party Injury – Protection if a visitor, staff member, or contractor is accidentally injured while near your storage unit.
Property Damage – Covers you if your goods, or a defect in your unit, cause damage to another person’s property.
Legal Defence Costs – Pays legal fees and expenses to defend a claim, even if you are not found liable.
Typical Example Claims
Trip and Fall Incident: A friend helping you move items trips over a box left outside the unit and suffers an ankle injury. Your policy covers medical expenses and compensation if required.
Damage to Neighbouring Unit: A shelving unit inside your storage space collapses and damages goods stored in the unit next door. The cost of repairing or replacing the damaged property is covered.
More Example Claims
Water Damage Claim: A water leak from a fridge stored in your unit seeps into a neighbouring space and ruins furniture. Your public liability cover pays for cleanup and replacement costs.
Accidental Vehicle Impact: While manoeuvring a trolley or small vehicle, you accidentally dent another customer’s car parked in the loading bay. The policy reimburses the repair cost.
With £2 million public liability insurance automatically included, you can be confident that you are meeting facility requirements and are financially protected if an accident leads to injury or property damage linked to your storage unit.
Limited Goods in Transit – What’s Included
Important: This Is Not Comprehensive Transit Insurance
Our storage policy includes a limited level of protection while your goods are being moved, but it is not designed to be full goods-in-transit insurance. Please read the scope, conditions and limits below and refer to your Schedule for exact terms.
Where and When Transit Cover Applies
Covered Property: Home contents and personal effects only.
Covered Period: During the Period of Insurance shown on your Schedule.
Covered Vehicles: While goods are within an enclosed car or commercial road vehicle.
Covered Journeys: Direct transit to the Self-Storage Location shown on your Schedule from any UK location; or direct transit from that Self-Storage Location to any location within the British Isles.
Fire
What is covered: Damage caused by fire affecting the transporting vehicle or the goods inside.
Example Claim: A sudden engine fire in the removal vehicle causes smoke and heat damage to cartons of clothing and personal belongings. The insurance covers cleaning or replacement costs.
Road Traffic Accident
What is covered: Damage where the conveying enclosed car or commercial road vehicle is also damaged.
Example Claim 1: During a move to a self-storage facility, the removal van is involved in a road traffic accident. Several packed boxes of furniture and electronics are damaged.
Example Claim 2: As goods are being moved into the van, a heavy wardrobe slips and breaks a valuable mirror inside a packed crate. Subject to policy terms and correct itemisation, the loss is covered.
Theft
What is covered: Theft where entry to or exit from the vehicle was effected by forcible and violent means.
Example Claim: While travelling to storage, thieves force open the rear doors of a locked van and steal bicycles and tools.
Key Exclusions and Limits
No cover if the conveying enclosed car or commercial road vehicle was unattended at the time of the loss.
Monetary Limit: We do not cover more than £10,000 or your sum insured, whichever is the less.
Scope Reminder: This is a limited benefit and does not replace a comprehensive goods-in-transit policy for removals or commercial haulage.
Making a Claim
Notify Us Immediately of any event which might give rise to a claim under this section.
Hold Liable Responsible Parties – any carrier, bailee or third party in line with their terms of trade.
Provide a Written Report of the event to us as soon as possible.
Notify the Police promptly of any vandalism, malicious acts, theft or attempted theft involving the insured property.
Cover always applies subject to the full policy wording and the limits and conditions set out on your quotation, Schedule and Policy Document. If you require broader protection for removals or commercial transport, please contact us to discuss a dedicated goods-in-transit policy.
Policy Ownership – What Name Should the Policy Be In and Why It Matters
Ensuring the policy is taken out in the correct legal name is essential. In the event of a claim, the insured name on your policy must match the legal owner of the goods to help ensure that any settlement can be paid without unnecessary delay. If you are unsure which name to use—especially for shared ownership, business-owned goods, or items held on behalf of another party—our team can guide you during the quotation process.
Policies can be issued in a wide range of names including individuals, joint names, families, partnerships, limited companies, charities, trusts, estates, management companies, residents’ associations, and in some cases pension or SIPP arrangements, depending on the ownership of the goods being insured.
You can also ask for interested parties to be noted on the policy where appropriate, such as another individual, a joint owner, a lender, a bank, a finance company, a storage provider, or another organisation with a financial interest in the insured property.
If you need an interested party to be shown, there is a box on the online application form where these details can be added. This helps make sure the policy reflects the ownership and financial interest arrangements correctly from the outset.
